Sodicity occurs when exchangeable sodium destabilises clay and fine particles. The soil can disperse when wet, seal at the surface and set hard as it dries. That restricts infiltration, aeration, emergence and root development.

Recognise the sodic pattern

  • Surface sealing or crusting after rain or irrigation
  • Water ponding or running off before entering
  • Cloudy water in a simple dispersion test
  • Sticky or slumped soil when wet
  • Hardsetting, cracking and difficult cultivation when dry
  • Shallow roots and persistent weak zones

One symptom is not enough. Confirm the pattern with soil testing, including exchangeable sodium percentage where appropriate, and consider salinity, texture, pH, water quality and subsoil constraints.

Do not confuse sodicity with other problems

Compaction

Compaction is physical compression. A compacted non-sodic soil may have low infiltration without dispersing. That is a different POWER BREAKER conversation.

Hydrophobic soil

What about gypsum and organic matter?

Gypsum can be relevant where calcium is required to displace sodium, but its effectiveness depends on rate, purity, placement and water movement. Organic amendments can support longer-term aggregation and biology. They should be integrated from test results rather than treated as automatic substitutes for diagnosis.
