How to Test for Sodic and Dispersive Clay at Home

How to test sodic and dispersive clay soil at home

Sealing, crusting, puddling and cloudy water are warning signs of sodic or dispersive clay. Diagnose the chemistry before choosing a treatment: CLAY FIXER is the full sodic-soil modifier; POWER BREAKER is for compacted or water-repellent non-sodic soil.

Simple home screening

  1. Collect intact dry soil aggregates from the problem layer.
  2. Place them gently in clear rainwater or deionised water.
  3. Leave the sample undisturbed and watch for clouding, slaking and clay dispersion.
  4. Compare it with a healthy-soil sample.
  5. Confirm important decisions with laboratory EC, ESP and exchangeable-cation testing.

Choose the correct FUTURE SOIL technology

If the soil is sodic, dispersive, reactive or hard-setting, use CLAY FIXER. Its soil-active, low-migration system binds where it is needed, remains effective across acidic or alkaline conditions and does not force a soil-pH change. If the problem is non-sodic compaction, low infiltration or hydrophobicity, use POWER BREAKER.

Reapply by behaviour

Do not treat by calendar alone. Reassess after cultivation, profile movement, cropping or renewed sealing. The treated profile delivers benefits longer, so intervention should decrease as the soil stabilises.
